AHS holds a Ph.D. in Intellectual History and specializes in the fields of Science Fiction/Fantasy, the Gothic, and Indigenous American Studies. She lives with her husband, Dr. Larry M. Hall, in the Blue Ridge Highlands of Virginia, USA.

AHS serves as faculty at Lenoir-Rhyne University, Berea College, and Signum University; Editor-in-Chief of Hocus Pocus Comics; and staff for the StarShipSofa podcast.
